August 13th is International Left-hander’s Day! Today we celebrate our right to be left-handed! :)

My sister and I are leftys born to right-handed parents. I’ve always been intrigued by our little uniqueness. And we’re in such good company. Lots of successful, creative individuals also share this characteristic with us – including graphic artists Albrecht Dürer and M.C. Escher.

I once met Doyald Young at an AIGA event years ago. He specializes in the design of logotypes, corporate alphabets, and typefaces. He has a most elegant, delicate, and beautiful style.

After his presentation, he signed copies of his book and I was shocked to notice that he’s a fellow lefty! When it was my turn for his autograph, I couldn’t resist sharing my glee with him. He asked, “You know what’s my favorite thing about being left-handed?” I shook my head. “Not having to switch my utensils over when I’m cutting meat.” Huh. How insightful!

My favorite bit about being a lefty: while at a computer, having the ability to write with my left hand and use the mouse with my right. Multitasking at its best!

My least favorite bit about being a lefty: ink smudges.
